Do You Need Dental Fillings?

We’ve been told that our gentle approach to dental tooth fillings leaves our patients hardly feeling a thing! We take extra care when numbing the area of the tooth filling and use biomimetic materials as much as possible.

One of the most common associations with the dentist is the sound of that drill while you get your tooth filled. To help distract you, a television is directly above you on the ceiling so you can lie back and relax while we go to work on your teeth.

What is a Dental Tooth Filling?

Tooth fillings or dental fillings are a common and effective treatment for cavities. The purpose of a filling is to restore the damaged tooth to its original shape and function, while preventing further decay. There are several types of dental fillings, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

Common Types of Dental Tooth Fillings:

Composite fillings:

Composite fillings, also known as white fillings, are made from a mixture of plastic and glass. They are tooth-coloured, making them a good option for filling cavities in visible areas of the mouth. Composite fillings are also quite durable and can be shaped to match the surrounding tooth structure, which makes them a good choice for repairing chips or cracks in the teeth.

Ceramic fillings:

Ceramic fillings are made from porcelain and are tooth-coloured, making them another good option for filling cavities in visible areas of the mouth. They are durable and can be shaped to match the surrounding tooth structure, also making them a good choice for repairing chips or cracks in the teeth. Ceramic fillings are also resistant to staining and are considered a good option for patients with allergies to metals.

What is the Process of Getting a Dental Tooth Filling?

Anaesthesia:

We will numb the area around the tooth to be filled with a local anaesthetic. This helps reduce discomfort during the procedure.

Placement of the filling:

We will then place the filling material into the cleaned cavity and shape it to match the surrounding tooth structure. We cure the material using a special light or chemical.

Removal of decay:

We remove the decayed portion of the tooth using a dental handpiece or laser. We will then clean the area to remove any remaining plaque or other foreign material.

Polishing

Finally, we will polish the filling to ensure it is smooth and comfortable.

We have vast experience placing dental tooth fillings and provide comprehensive but easy to understand post-operative instructions. This will ensure the best possible outcome and help prevent further decay or other dental problems from developing.
