Sunshine Checkup

We Offer More Than Just Teeth Cleaning

A dental check-up and clean is an important part of maintaining good oral health. Regular visits to us can help prevent and detect dental problems early, when they are easier to treat. During your dental check-up, we will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth to identify any issues, such as cavities or gum disease.

We will start with a comprehensive examination before moving forward with your general dental check-up and clean. When you come to us we have the equipment available to give you a comprehensive examination which includes an OPG full mouth X-ray.

We have a CBCT scanner onsite so that we don’t have to send you away to get one, as many other dentists do if we need further investigation for implants, wisdom tooth or difficult root canal treatments. We also provide the option of an Intra Oral Scanner that takes a full and comprehensive 3D image of your mouth in order for therapeutic or orthodontic devices to be made for you. No more uncomfortable moulds!

From a dental check-up and clean to more complex dental solutions, our team uses the most advanced technology to pinpoint the treatments you may need and present you with a personalised dental treatment plan that also includes therapeutic options.

Here's What to Expect During a Dental Check-up and Clean With Us:

Examination:

We will start by examining your teeth and gums for signs of decay, gum disease, or other problems.

X-Rays:

Depending on your specific needs, we may also take X-rays to see the condition of the teeth and jawbone. This can help identify issues that are not visible to the naked eye, such as decay between the teeth, bone loss, and impacted wisdom teeth.

Cleaning:

After the examination, we will perform a clean, which involves removing plaque and tartar build up from the teeth.

Fluoride Treatment:

We will apply a fluoride treatment to help strengthen the teeth and prevent decay.

Personalised Treatment Plan:

After the examination and clean, we will discuss any issues we have identified and provide recommendations for treatment. This may include fillings, crowns, root canal therapy, or other procedures to address cavities, gum disease, or other problems.

At Home Care:

We will provide instructions on how to properly brush and floss your teeth at home to help prevent plaque build up and maintain good oral health.

We recommend scheduling a dental check-up and cleaning every six months. This frequency may vary based on individual needs, such as the presence of gum disease or other oral health problems. During these appointments, it is also important to inform the dentist of any changes in your oral health, such as new pain or sensitivity, changes in your bite, or bleeding gums.

Do You Need Dental Fillings?

We’ve been told that our gentle approach to dental tooth fillings leaves our patients hardly feeling a thing! We take extra care when numbing the area of the tooth filling and use biomimetic materials as much as possible.

One of the most common associations with the dentist is the sound of that drill while you get your tooth filled. To help distract you, a television is directly above you on the ceiling so you can lie back and relax while we go to work on your teeth.

What is a Dental Tooth Filling?

Tooth fillings or dental fillings are a common and effective treatment for cavities. The purpose of a filling is to restore the damaged tooth to its original shape and function, while preventing further decay. There are several types of dental fillings, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

Common Types of Dental Tooth Fillings:

Composite fillings:

Composite fillings, also known as white fillings, are made from a mixture of plastic and glass. They are tooth-coloured, making them a good option for filling cavities in visible areas of the mouth. Composite fillings are also quite durable and can be shaped to match the surrounding tooth structure, which makes them a good choice for repairing chips or cracks in the teeth.

Ceramic fillings:

Ceramic fillings are made from porcelain and are tooth-coloured, making them another good option for filling cavities in visible areas of the mouth. They are durable and can be shaped to match the surrounding tooth structure, also making them a good choice for repairing chips or cracks in the teeth. Ceramic fillings are also resistant to staining and are considered a good option for patients with allergies to metals.

What is the Process of Getting a Dental Tooth Filling?

Anaesthesia:

We will numb the area around the tooth to be filled with a local anaesthetic. This helps reduce discomfort during the procedure.

Placement of the filling:

We will then place the filling material into the cleaned cavity and shape it to match the surrounding tooth structure. We cure the material using a special light or chemical.

Removal of decay:

We remove the decayed portion of the tooth using a dental handpiece or laser. We will then clean the area to remove any remaining plaque or other foreign material.

Polishing

Finally, we will polish the filling to ensure it is smooth and comfortable.

We have vast experience placing dental tooth fillings and provide comprehensive but easy to understand post-operative instructions. This will ensure the best possible outcome and help prevent further decay or other dental problems from developing.

What Are Dental Inlays or Onlays?

Dental or teeth inlays and onlays are two types of dental restorations used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. Inlays and onlays are often used when a filling is not sufficient to restore the tooth, but a crown is not necessary.

Inlays are typically made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin and are custom-made to fit precisely into the damaged area of the tooth. The inlay is cemented into place and can last for many years with proper care.

Onlays are similar to inlays but are used to repair damage that extends to the biting surface of the tooth. Onlays are also custom-made to fit the damaged area of the tooth and are typically made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin.

Onlays are often used to repair large cavities or fractures that are too extensive for a filling but not severe enough to require a crown.

Inlays and onlays are often preferred over traditional fillings because they are more durable and can last for many years with proper care.

What is the Process for Getting an Inlay or Onlay?

We will prepare the damaged tooth by removing any decay or damage and taking an impression of the tooth. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where the inlay or onlay is custom-made to fit the tooth precisely.

We will cement the inlay or onlay into place using a dental adhesive. We then check to ensure that the restoration fits properly and is comfortable for the patient. After the inlay or onlay is in place, we will polish the tooth to give it a natural appearance.

Inlays and onlays are strong and durable restorations that can last for many years with proper care. Patients should brush and floss regularly and visit us for regular check-ups to ensure that the restoration is still in good condition.

Experts in Tooth Removal and Dental Extractions

Tooth extraction is something that can strike fear into the hearts of most. But it doesn’t have to be the unpleasant experience you may be expecting that you have had elsewhere. When you come to our Gold Coast dental clinic for tooth removal or dental extraction, we always aim to be as minimally invasive as possible and preserve the bone as much as we can in order to keep the area ready for a possible implant down the track.

People need dental extraction for a number of reasons. It could be the tooth is damaged beyond repair, or the gum disease is so severe that there is no supporting structure to hold the tooth.

What Steps Are Involved in Tooth Removal?

Consultation:

Before the extraction we will examine the affected tooth and take X-rays to determine the best course of treatment. We also discuss the extraction procedure with you and answer any questions you may have.

Anaesthesia:

Before the extraction we will numb the area around the tooth using a local anaesthetic. This helps reduce any discomfort during the procedure. In some cases, you may be given a sedative to help you relax, as we know how confronting the thought of having a tooth removed can be for many people.

Tooth removal:

We use special tools to loosen the tooth and remove it from the socket. In some cases, the tooth may need to be broken into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove. Rest assured with every patient we make sure to use the least invasive form of removal to provide you with the most comfort we can.

Closure:

After the tooth is removed, the socket is cleaned and packed with gauze to stop any bleeding. We may also stitch the gum tissue closed, if necessary.

Aftercare:

We provide you with instructions on how to care for the extraction site, including how to manage any pain or swelling, how to brush and floss the surrounding teeth, and when to return for a follow-up appointment.

After the tooth extraction, the patient may experience some discomfort and swelling, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs.

In some cases, our Gold Coast dentists may recommend a replacement tooth, such as a dental implant or bridge, to restore the function and appearance of the missing tooth. This can help prevent further dental problems from developing and maintain a healthy, functional bite. This is determined on a case by case basis and we make sure you have input into your treatment every step of the way.

Experts in Wisdom Teeth Extractions

When it comes to wisdom tooth extraction on the Gold Coast, we are here to help.

Our dental experts will always try our best to minimise the removal of bone and use Concentrated Growth Factors (CGF) to enhance the healing process and provide less chance for infection of the area while you are recovering. Through using CGF we have noticed a marked reduction in dry socket pain and related issues.

If you require sedation for your wisdom tooth extraction, we work with our trusted medical anaesthetist on-site to give you IV sedation.

If your wisdom tooth extraction is assessed to be particularly complicated , we will refer you on to a trusted oral maxillofacial surgeon.

What is Wisdom Teeth Extraction All About?

Wisdom teeth extraction is a common dental procedure that involves removing one or more wisdom teeth, which are the molars located at the back of the mouth. These teeth usually emerge in the late teenage years or early adulthood, but they can cause problems if they do not have enough room to grow or if they emerge in a position that is difficult to clean. Wisdom tooth extraction is extremely common.

Here are some of the reasons why we remove wisdom teeth:

Impacted teeth:

Wisdom teeth can become impacted, which means they are unable to fully emerge from the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and other dental problems.

Crowding:

Wisdom teeth can cause crowding in the mouth, which can lead to misalignment of other teeth or difficulty with completed orthodontic treatments, causing the newly aligned teeth to move again.

Decay or infection:

Wisdom teeth are difficult to clean due to their position at the very back of the mouth, which can increase the risk of decay and infection. Removing the wisdom teeth can help improve overall dental health.

The Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure Steps:

Consultation:

We will examine the wisdom teeth and take X-rays to determine the best course of treatment.

Anaesthesia:

We numb the area around the wisdom teeth using a local anaesthetic. In some cases, you may be given a sedative to help you relax.

Tooth removal:

We use special tools to loosen the wisdom teeth and remove them from the socket, as with a regular tooth extraction. In some cases, the teeth may need to be broken into smaller pieces to make them easier to remove.

Closure:

After the wisdom teeth are removed, the socket will be cleaned and may be packed with gauze to stop any bleeding. We then stitch the gum tissue closed, if necessary.

Aftercare:

We will provide the patient with instructions on how to care for the extraction site, including how to manage any pain or swelling, how to brush and floss the other teeth, and when to return for a follow-up appointment.

We are very experienced with wisdom teeth extraction and provide comprehensive aftercare instructions. We are also available at any time to chat with you if you are experiencing concern or pain after the extraction.

Most discomfort and swelling can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs.

Root Canal Information, Costs and More

When it comes to root canal treatment, our Gold Coast dentists stay up-to-date with the latest technology and instruments in order to make your experience as comfortable as we can. We use rotary instruments on your teeth, making the filing process more effective as using an apex locator which electronically measures the length of the roots. While these should be standard practice for all root canal treatments on the Gold Coast, our root canal specialists take pride in making sure we are as gentle and efficient as possible.

What is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure that involves removing the infected or damaged pulp inside a tooth and replacing it with a filling. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or damaged, it can cause severe pain and can even lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

What are the reasons we would recommend root canal therapy?

Infection:

If the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected due to decay or injury, it can cause a painful abscess to form at the root of the tooth.

Damage:

If a tooth is cracked or fractured, it can damage the pulp and lead to infection or inflammation.

Decay:

If a cavity is left untreated, it can eventually reach the pulp and cause an infection.

What is Involved in a Root Canal Procedure?

Consultation:

We will examine the tooth and take X-rays to determine the extent of the damage to the pulp.

Anaesthesia:

We will numb the area around the tooth using a local anaesthetic. In some cases, you may be given a sedative to help you relax.

Access:

We create a small hole in the top of the tooth to access the pulp.

Cleaning:

We use special tools to remove the infected or damaged pulp and clean the inside of the tooth.

Filling:

Once the tooth is cleaned, we fill the empty space with a special material. This helps to support the structure of the tooth and prevent further infection.

Restoration:

After the root canal therapy is complete, we may recommend placing a crown or other restoration to protect the tooth and restore its function. After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort and sensitivity, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs.

In some cases, root canal therapy may not be successful or the infection may return, which requires additional treatment, such as tooth extraction or re-treatment of root canal therapy. We will always discuss all options with you to make an informed decision about your ongoing treatment.

Periodontitis Treatment

Our Gold Coast-based dentists can help with gum disease treatments, which refer to a range of procedures and treatments to improve the health of the gums and surrounding soft tissue.

Here are some common gum treatments:

Scaling and Root Planing:

This is a deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque, tartar and bacterial toxins from the surface of the teeth and below the gum line.

Gum Graft Surgery:

This is a surgical procedure in which a piece of gum tissue is taken from one area of the mouth and transplanted to another area to cover exposed roots or to thicken thin gum tissue.

Flap Surgery:

This is a surgical procedure in which the gum tissue is lifted away from the tooth to remove bacteria and tartar from the surface of the root. The gum tissue is then repositioned and sutured in place.

Laser Therapy:

This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to remove infected gum tissue and promote healing.

Antibiotic Therapy:

This involves the use of antibiotics, either topically or orally, to kill bacteria and promote healing of the gums.

It’s important to note that proper oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing regularly, promotes healthy gums and can prevent the need for gum treatments.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as bleeding, red or swollen gums, or loose teeth, it is important to book in a visit to us for an evaluation.
